Education – the pathway to a successful future Famous band Pink Floyd released their song, â€Å"Another Brick in the Wall pt. 2† over 20 years ago, but the words â€Å"We don’t need no education† (Waters, â€Å"The Wall†) still ring throughout the heads of many. Contrary to the widespread popularity of this song, the common consensus is that an education is a necessity in the 21st century. In the Enlightenment era, as philosophers wrote their ideas that the country would be based on, they instructed people on the best way to educate. Through authors such as Rousseau, Jefferson, and Washington, we see prevalent ideas about the purpose of education to a society and it’s people. Between the 21st Century and the Enlightenment era, views on the best forms of education in conjunction with who should be educated has dramatically shifted, however views on the best environment to educate in and the benefits of education to a society have stayed relatively similar, but for drastically different reasons. 18th century philosophy neglects the necessity of a formal education and rather relies on self-education, but this ideology has been lost as shown throughout the works of 21st century writers. Enlightenment philosophers believe that human efforts are strong enough to make due without a comprehensive understanding of academic subjects.
